At the Annual Digital Printer Awards

BERFORTS GROUP WINS DELPHAX-SPONSORED AWARD FOR BOOKS

LONDON—Sponsored by Delphax Technologies Inc., the Award for Books in the Digital Printer Awards for 2009 went to the Berforts Group, a leading provider of digital printing services, headquartered in Hastings in East Sussex, England.

Berforts was honored for its digital production of The Jersey Law Reports for Law Reports International.   A “beautifully bound and beautifully classic case bound book,” said the judges. Law Reports International is the official publisher of the court reports of the United Kingdom’s principal offshore financial jurisdictions, including the Channel Island of Jersey.  The Jersey Law Reports contain published judgments of the Royal Court and the appeal courts.

The Digital Printer Awards for 2009 recognized innovation and excellence in digital printing, finishing and design in 12 categories. The winners, selected by an independent panel of judges, were honored recently in a day of celebration at the Park Lane Hotel in Piccadilly, London.

In its coverage of the event, Digital Printer magazine commented:  “Not only were the judges delighted with the quality and volume of entries, but also with the number of very innovative and creative applications that had been produced during what has been a very tough year financially. Pioneering companies in digital have shown just what can be achieved in this sector and are genuinely impressing their customers with what print can do.  They are turning the industry into a hugely exciting and dynamic communications resource, which has a strong and firm foundation.”

The Award for Books recognizes the growing role of digital production in the book printing industry.  The recipient of the Delphax-sponsored award in 2008 was Good News Press of Essex, which coincidentally used a high-speed Delphax CR2000 roll-fed press to print its winning entry, a book of Sherlock Holmes short stories.

The Delphax CR Series offers the fastest monochrome, toner-based digital print systems in the world, operating at speeds up to 500 feet per minute, producing 2,182 pages per minute at 600 x 600 dpi print quality.  The productivity advantages of the CR Series, including its tight web design and the ability to print at high speed on light weight papers, offer the money-saving option of replacing less productive pieces of equipment with a single unit that reduces labor, paper and mailing costs.  CR Series presses can either replace or complement traditional web offset presses that have much higher short-run operational costs.

As Digital Printer observed, “The singular benefits of digital printing – its very short run capability and variable data options – have allowed many print buyers to still specify intricate projects and get a good return on investment without the need to print massive runs.”
